Destination

The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a vast area covering 4262 square kilometers in India alone, with a larger portion in Bangladesh. It is located at the South Eastern tip of the 24 Paraganas district in the state of West Bengal and is a part of the world’s largest delta formed by the rivers Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna. The Sundarbans forest is about 10,000 square kilometers across India and Bangladesh, of which 40% lies in India. It is home to many rare and globally threatened wildlife species such as the estuarine crocodile, royal Bengal tiger, water monitor lizard, Gangetic dolphin, and olive ridley turtle.

The Sundarbans is the largest area of mangrove forest in the world and the only one inhabited by tigers. The best time to visit the Sundarbans is during winters between December and February, although the park is open for longer from September to March. The Sundarbans covers 10,000 square kilometers of land and water (more than half of it in India, the rest in Bangladesh) in the Ganges delta and contains the world’s largest area of mangrove forests. It is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats, and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, presenting an excellent example of ongoing ecological processes. The Sundarbans is a unique and must-visit wildlife destination, offering a wealth of natural beauty and diverse wildlife.
